Tropical Kerala can warm and excite you in February. On the Arabian Sea, in southwestern India, Kerala is a state where the sea slips inward, forming a tangle of braided, bright green waterways lined with nodding coconut palms. The food is South Indian -- spicy and fresh -- using fish, tamarind and coconut.  The people are happy, curious and outgoing.  Kerala has an exceptionally high literacy level.  We stay in quaint, immaculate bed and breakfasts and small lodges, several of which were converted from distinguished ancestral family homes.

Kerala is the only part of India where Hindus, Muslims, and Christians live and work hand in hand. Compared to North India, Kerala feels quiet, sweet, fresh and languid.  Paddling days on this trip are easy and warm, and South Indian culture is distinct and fascinating.  We take gentle walks along the waterways and into villages, visit festivals, temples, and churches,  and shop for silks, sandalwood and local crafts.   We finish the trip with a gala seafood feast at a truly luxurious hotel on the Arabian sea.
